Fussy Baby Program for Alameda County

Does your new baby cry a lot?

Is he having trouble sleeping?

Is she having difficulty feeding?

Are you worried about being a good parent?

Are you feeling sad, stressed, or overwhelmed?

You’re not alone.

All babies cry, but some cry more than others. One in five babies is fussy—difficult to comfort and may have trouble feeding and sleeping. For parents, caring for a fussy baby can be exhausting and frustrating.

There is no quick fix—but there is help. Call JFCS/East Bay’s Fussy Baby Network Program if you have concerns about your baby’s temperament and behavior during their first year of life. Our Infant Specialists will work with you to find more ways to soothe, care for, and enjoy your baby. We’ll also explore ways to reduce stress while supporting you in your important role as a parent.

Fussy Baby Parent/Infant Program

An Infant Specialist will respond to your initial call by the next business day. The Infant Specialist will meet with you in your home or at our office to explore your concerns, offer support, and provide resources. We will talk about your baby’s day, think together about strategies to soothe and calm your baby, and explore ways that you can enjoy your baby more and begin to take care of yourself.

Berkeley Moms Group begins April 21

BirthWays New Moms Group is beginning soon!
Tuesdays 1:30-3pm

April 21st to May 19th

According to Sara L on Yelp this is the “BEST MOMS GROUP EVER!! Fantastic facilitator, wonderful women, we’re still hanging out months later.  This group will save your sanity.”

This is a facilitated support group for new moms and their babies -(usually babies rage in age from 2 weeks to 4 months). We will gather at the BirthWays space to share the intensity and joys of new motherhood with other moms.

This 6 week series will cover such topics as: sharing birth stories, finding time to heal your body and mind, feeding your baby, adjusting to your new identity as a parent, trusting yourself enough to know when not to listen to another piece of “good” advice, navigating changing relationships with partners and friends, going out with your baby, preparing to go back to work or stay home with baby, sleep… what sleep? And most importantly, realizing that you are not alone in this journey.

For a lot of moms this is an opportunity to practice getting out of the house and feeding and caring for your babies in public in a safe space.

Brooke on Yelp says this: “I took a Birthways new mom class that started when my son was just two weeks old. It was such an amazing experience to be with about 12 or so other new moms going through the same things I was going through. I learned a lot about breastfeeding, sleeping issues, massage, and much more for my son, but also self-care for me. It’s been three years and our group still keeps in touch. I feel a deep connection to those kids, too. When I see those little guys at the Y or around town I think back to those early sleep-deprived days and actually miss it. Birthways is such a great supportive environment. Highly recommended!!”

Facilitated by:

Stacia Biltekoff ~Postpartum Doula, Co- Founder of Bun & Bundle and Mama

Cost: $175 per 6 week session

Upcoming Second Time Moms Group Berkeley

Announcing open registration for the January session of the
Mindfulness-Based 2nd-Time Moms’ Group
Similar to the Mindfulness-Based New Moms’ Group, the 2nd-Time Moms’
Groups are a combination of meditation/discussion/support group geared
towards mothers of babies up to 6+ months of age who have one or more
older children. These groups meet for 6 weeks and provide an
opportunity for moms to talk about the joys and challenges of
integrating your newborn into your family and balancing the care needs
of two or more children, yourself, and your partner. We will practice
mindfulness skills, build community, and discuss topics relevant to
mindful mothering. Sample topics include: balancing the needs of two or
more children, helping your older child in the transition to becoming
an older sister/brother, attending to your relationship, and staying
“present” in the midst of the chaos, providing scaffolding for the
development of a positive sibling relationship, and more. While these
groups are only able to accommodate moms with newborns the groups meet
in the morning when older siblings may be in school or with another
care provider.

Having run the first time moms’ groups for 6 years now, I began
offering the 2nd-Time Moms’ Groups after several families had their 2nd
child and requested that such a group form. I participated in both a
!st and 2nd-Time Moms’ Group myself, my children are now 14 and 17, and
found them very useful in helping me stay grounded in the midst of what often felt like a storm.
The format of the group is that we begin with
a 10 to 15 minute guided meditation and then open the group up for
discussion of whatever is on the minds of the moms participating in the
group. The focus of these groups often tend to be more on the older sibling,
for example how to meet his/her needs while
tending to your newborn, but there is also a focus on building healthy
sibling relationships, maintaining connection with your partner, the
juggling act in general, hopefully some humor, and an attempt to
integrate concepts of mindfulness as this perspective can be so very
helpful in parenting and in life in general. Moms have often expressed
that it is nice to have time to connect with their newborn during these
groups since life with two little ones can often be chaotic.

A bit about these groups …

While this is not a therapy group it is a therapist-led support/discussion/meditation group facilitated by Gina Hassan, Ph.D, licensed psychologist and mother, who is an individual & couples therapist specializing in the transition to parenthood as well as a mindfulness instructor.

The group will meet for 6 weeks in Berkeley from 10:00 to 11:45. Most likely date is Monday but Fridays are also being considered.
The cost of the group is $240.00 for the 6 weeks.

Please let me know if you have any questions and/or if you are interested in reserving a space in this group.
Also, please feel free to spread the word to any other moms you may know and/or post on any list-serves you may be on. Many thanks and looking forward to getting our group going. Kind regards – Gina
