Non toxic Alternatives for Halloween Face Paints

Oooooooooo.  Halloween is almost here.  Do you have plans to celebrate with your baby?

There are so many costumes to fit your little one.  But when we are talking about face paints, natural is best.  We don’t want to use toxic face paints on their tender skin.  Safe cosmetics has some alternatives and ‘make it yourself’ recipes to try.  Remember, when putting anything on babies skin, test a small patch and watch for reactions before lathering it on.

Robert Coles

Robert Coles is a professor of psychiatry and medical humanities and the author of numerous books, including his series Children of Crisis, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize.

I first read Robert Coles when I was a child development specialist in a home visitation HIV/drug treatment program in the inner city. Coming from a stable home in suburbia, I needed to understand more about families, specifically children, in crisis because I was caught in the middle of a war zone.  What I learned from his teachings were about children’s struggles and survival in our society all of which is relevant to child development today.

One day, I drove 4 hours to go to a conference where he was speaking.  And if there is one person that I am glad I have met in my life, its him.

Now, you can listen to his stories as well. This is a video from a talk he gave at Harvard, called “Children Consider Human Conflict.”

Dr. Coles body of work is extensive.  Here are some of his books that I recommend.

The Call of Stories.

The Spirituality of Children.

The Moral Intelligence of Children.

The Story of Ruby Bridges.  (Children’s book he wrote, based on his work with Ruby Bridges)

Infants and Parents needed for Roots of Empathy
——————————

Roots of Empathy is seeking parents with infants 2-4 months old for its Oakland
program. Roots of Empathy is an award willing program for elementary school
children, which has been bringing the wisdom of parents and babies into classrooms
since 1996.  Taught by a trained instructor, the program helps children develop
emotional literacy by learning about a baby’s needs and development.  You and your
infant would team with a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor and an Oakland
elementary school classroom for nine 30-minute visits between late Oct and June.

Jean Liedloff, The Continuum Concept

I was completely taken with the book The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff.   Her observations of child development and parenting in South American tribes challenged my thoughts on contemporary parenting and laid the foundation for my own family.  After moving to the Bay Area 15 years ago, I saw her one day at a cafe.  I approached her and thanked her for her book and life’s work and continued to meet with her.

Unfortunately, Jean died on March 15, 2011.

Its a long story, but I had Jean’s possessions strewn across my house these past couple days.  Artifacts from her travels, her book in different languages, treasures from her life.  I was tripping over them!

I am genuinely touched that I can be reminded of her influence on my work with a few common objects that I was gifted.

If you haven’t read The Continuum Concept.  In Jean’s honor, please seek it out.
