Top Toys Of All Time

In my class I talk about and show you how to use things from around the house to play with instead of feeling like you have to buy loads of baby gadgets.  Although the stores are brimming with choices, so are the rooms in your house and the paths in the local parks.

I had to laugh when I stumbled upon this article from GeekDad on the Wired website.  It speaks to exactly this….enjoy, laugh, and make each birthday and holiday a joyful one with just the basics.

Jean Liedloff, The Continuum Concept

I was completely taken with the book The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff.   Her observations of child development and parenting in South American tribes challenged my thoughts on contemporary parenting and laid the foundation for my own family.  After moving to the Bay Area 15 years ago, I saw her one day at a cafe.  I approached her and thanked her for her book and life’s work and continued to meet with her.

Unfortunately, Jean died on March 15, 2011.

Its a long story, but I had Jean’s possessions strewn across my house these past couple days.  Artifacts from her travels, her book in different languages, treasures from her life.  I was tripping over them!

I am genuinely touched that I can be reminded of her influence on my work with a few common objects that I was gifted.

If you haven’t read The Continuum Concept.  In Jean’s honor, please seek it out.

Tum e Time Families

Last week I was touched by all the families I talked to outside of class.  I met a family from last year, admired all the growth in their toddler and heard stories of how they still sing the songs and use the techniques they learned in class.  Then I received the photo below from another tum e time ‘graduate’.  You can see him exploring his treasure basket.  He even learned how to spin the basket to get what he needed!  And lastly, I caught up with two families, currently in my group, walking in the park on a beautiful sunny day.

I am thankful to all the families who have attended my classes and continue to help me create a class that is educational and enjoyable for the whole family.

Please keep sending your stories and photos!

Benefits of Baby Carrying

“If it’s true, as the accumulated evidence seems to suggest, that movement and bodily closeness are good for babies, especially in the earliest weeks…we’ve been ingenious and consistent in depriving them of these sensations.”

~ Dr. Benjamin Spock

Here is an article from Pathyways to family wellness I cite in my class regarding baby carrying.  It is a beautiful discussion on development, equipment and holding.  I only wish it had the pictures that accompanied the article in the magazine

For a more local resource regarding babywearing, I have a blog post called Babywearing which highlights the group Babywearing International of the Bay Area.
