Introducing Karen Levine, Psychotherapy

-1I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Karen since I was her doula many years ago. Now, I want to let everyone know about her work as she has much to offer both individuals and families.

Here is what she says about her East Bay practice:

In my private practice in Berkeley, I work with adults and adolescents who are struggling with relationship issues, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, self esteem issues, among many other concerns. I am experienced working with parents who are going through transitions in their lives, including the birth of children, career shifts, and attending to the changing realities of parenting.  I also work with couples of all relationship styles, including partners in traditional and nontraditional relationships and families. I am experienced working with couples who are experiencing the challenges of parenting and step-parenting, and the stresses that parenting can place on a relationship. I also have experience working with parents of children with special needs.  Please feel free to contact me, if you would like to learn more about me and about how therapy might benefit you.

We do not turn out “just fine”.

We do not turn out “just fine”.

When my daughter was about 3, her great grandmother swooped her up and said playfully, “You need a good spanking.” I froze. Those were the threats I grew up with and I never wanted my daughter to hear. My voice shook. “We don’t hit in our family.” I was met with an angered stare. “Then how will she ever learn?” was her gruff response. I stood strong, took my daughter from her and said, “The only thing you learn is that its OK to be hit and its OK to hit someone else.”

Not sure it made an impact on my grandmother, but for me and my daughter it was a moment when (as my friend put it) “You blew your genetic code right out of the water.”
